CEMA: A Developer of American National Standards

CEMA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop American National Standards (ANS) using the CEMA Procedures for Development of American National Standards.  As an ANS Developer, CEMA plays a leading role in setting the standards that shape the safe and efficient design, manufacturing, and application of conveyor equipment. As ANSI states, “accreditation by ANSI as a standards developer represents a public statement of the value placed on an open and equitable consensus development process.”

ANSI coordinates, facilitates, and promotes the development of voluntary consensus standards that are relied upon by industry, government agencies, and consumers across the United States and around the world.

CEMA developed and maintains 13 American National Standards that are widely recognized across the industry. These standards represent decades of consensus-driven expertise from manufacturers, engineers, users, and other key stakeholders in the conveyor sector.

CEMA’s ANSI accreditation means our standards development process is:

  • Open and transparent
  • Consensus-based
  • Balanced across stakeholders
  • Rigorous in due process and periodic review

This ensures every ANSI/CEMA standard reflects both industry best practices and evolving technologies—promoting safety, compatibility, and efficiency across the material handling field.

CEMA Consensus Bodies

CEMA Standards are developed through the work of Consensus Bodies - groups that approve the content of a standard and whose vote demonstrates evidence of consensus according to ANSI rules.  In 2025 - 2026, CEMA will be accepting applications for Consensus Bodies for all of the standards listed below.  For additional information about CEMA Consensus Bodies, or to find out more about joining a Consensus Body, please contact CEMA Engineering Manager, Naylu Garces (naylu@cemanet.org).
